 What is study abroad | Into and Details 

Studying abroad is an exciting way, to enrich your academic learning, while developing personal and professional skills to help you, advance after college. UW-Madison offers over 260 programs, in more than 65 countries, making us, a national leader in providing study abroad opportunities.

From helping you to select a program, and preparing you before you go, to supporting you while you're, abroad and assisting you when you return, we’re here every step of the way to help you navigate the world.

You'll earn credit towards graduation, for all courses taken abroad, which, is recorded on your transcript and becomes, part of your UW-Madison GPA. Classes abroad come to life as you simultaneously, engage with politics, history, and cultures, throughout the world that shape the materials we're learning.

For example, you could discover how politics shape expression, while exploring the street art of Argentina, or feel the power of the monuments referenced, in the Greek classics, or even uncover the cradle of humankind, while on a dig in Africa.

In addition to making progress towards your degree, many of our programs also offer unique research, fieldwork, and internship opportunities.



We even offer domestic study away, options, including a professional internship, program in Washington, DC.

Study abroad helps develop both technical and interpersonal, skills are that are increasingly sought after by employers, such as proficiency in a world language, practical application, of research or fieldwork skills, and strengthening, your adaptability, flexibility, communication, and team building abilities.

Although studying abroad can be a fantastic way, to learn a new language or improve your language skills, you don't have to speak a second language to go abroad.

There are plenty of opportunities, in English speaking countries such as the United, Kingdom or Australia, or programs, that offer a wide variety of courses in English, in countries where English is not the official language.

Students of all majors can study abroad, from freshman to senior year. And we even have programs for graduate, and professional students.

You can study abroad during the summer, semester, year, winter intersession, or spring break, and even select from programs as long as a full year, to as short as one week.

As a study abroad student, you're, eligible for scholarships that can, be applied towards your program, such as the Study Abroad, Scholars, which awards between $1,500 to $4,000, to participate on the UW-Madison program.

In many cases, you may even be able to apply, your financial aid towards the program fee.  Many more resources are available to you, on our website and other study abroad advising offices.

There are four study abroad offices on campus. The central study abroad office is, International Academic Programs, IAP, which offers general advising for students of all majors.

IAP works in close partnership with study abroad, offices within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the Wisconsin, School of Business to offer programs, and advising specifically designed for those student, academic needs.

In addition to the study abroad advising offices, the International Internship Program office, supports students across campus seeking internships abroad.
